The Orchard litter

Juno × Rook, born August 3, 2026

Last updated October 7, 2026, at nine weeks and two days. Juno whelped two males and three females without help. All five are BAER-normal in both ears and had normal ACVO puppy eye exams. They go home on the weekend of October 10–11.

We paired Juno with Rook for her movement and his rear, and because their pedigrees don’t meet in eight generations (litter COI 3.9 % over ten). Both carry one copy of the blue dilute gene, which we published when we announced the pairing; one puppy, Macoun, is blue. We named them after Hudson Valley apples.

Puppy diary

  1. Macoun lying indoors with her red collar, week 9

    October 5, 2026

Week 9: car rides, crates, and four families confirmed

Everyone has now done three short car rides in a crate, one of them to the feed store and back. Macoun was carsick the first time and fine the second. Winesap barked the whole way and fell asleep at the end of the driveway.

Matching is done: Macoun to Kingston, Russet to Rhinebeck, Pippin to Ithaca, and Cortland is staying. Winesap is still open to an approved active home — if that is you, apply and say so in the last box.

Go-home weekend is Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11. Each family has a two-hour slot; bring the crate, nothing else.

  2. Cortland, fawn and white with a dark mask, in her collar and name tag against the grass, week 8

    September 28, 2026

Week 8: eyes, ears and microchips

All five had their puppy eye exam with an ACVO ophthalmologist today: no abnormalities. BAER testing was on Thursday at the specialty clinic in Kingston: all five hear in both ears. The certificates go into each folder.

Microchips went in at the same visit and are enrolled with AKC Reunite. We transfer each one into the new owner’s name on go-home day.

Cortland has her own name tag now, since she is staying. She wore it out to the puppy yard and sat for the camera for exactly one frame.

  3. September 21, 2026

Week 7: first vaccine and temperament evaluations

First DAPPv shot (Nobivac) and a full vet exam this morning. Weights all on curve.

This afternoon a friend who has never met them ran our seven-week evaluation: a stranger approaching, a dropped metal pan, an open umbrella, a wobble board, a paper ball, and the flirt pole. We film it and send each family their puppy’s clip. The notes on each puppy’s page come from it.

  4. September 7, 2026

Week 5: the puppy yard, and the first visitors

The litter now spends warm afternoons in the fenced puppy yard behind the kitchen: grass, gravel, a low ramp, a tunnel and a kiddie pool with two inches of water. Pippin goes to the far corner, alone. Russet waits to be carried.

First family visits started this week, by appointment, shoes off and hands washed. The cats have been formally introduced through the baby gate.

  5. August 24, 2026

Week 3: eyes open, ears up, first dewormer

All eyes open by day 14 and ears working by day 18. First pyrantel dose today. They have started toddling to the edge of the whelping box to toilet, which is the beginning of house training.

Juno now spends most of the day on the sofa next door and comes in to feed. Weights are doubling on schedule.

  6. August 3, 2026

Born: two boys and three girls

Juno whelped five puppies between 4:10 am and 9:40 am, with no help needed — two males and three females, birth weights from 10 oz to 12 oz. One is blue, which we expected might happen: both parents carry one copy of the dilute gene, and we said so when we announced the pairing.

Mother and puppies are in the whelping room off our kitchen. Visits from week 5.

Winesap needs an active home with no cats. Is that you?
