What we test, and why
No test makes a puppy healthy. Testing tells us which pairings avoid the conditions we can see coming, and publishing the results lets you check our working. Every result below has a date and the scheme or lab that issued it. Ask us for any certificate and we will send it.
We test to the Irish Kennel Club's expectations and the Royal Kennel Club's Best Practice set for the breed, plus the extra DNA tests most good Aussie breeders in Europe now run.
The tests
Hips (BVA scheme)
X-rayed once, after 12 months, and scored by a BVA panel: 0–53 per hip, written left:right (total). Lower is better. We breed only from totals under 16.
Elbows (BVA scheme)
Graded 0 to 3 from the same X-rays. We breed only from grade 0.
Eyes, every year
A clinical exam under the BVA/RKC/ISDS scheme, repeated annually because some eye disease appears later in life. Every litter is also screened at 7 weeks.
CEA and prcd-PRA
DNA tests for collie eye anomaly and a progressive retinal atrophy that ends in blindness. All our dogs are clear.
HSF4 hereditary cataract
A DNA test for one inherited cataract; around a quarter of Aussies carry it. Fia is a carrier and is only ever mated to clear dogs.
MDR1
A gene that makes some drugs dangerous to the dog. About half of Aussies carry at least one copy. See below.
DM, CD and NCL6
Degenerative myelopathy (a late-onset spinal disease), cone degeneration (day blindness) and a form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Carriers are fine to breed to clear dogs; we never pair two carriers.
M-locus and natural bobtail
We test every dog for merle (with allele length, which shows hidden 'cryptic' merles) and for the natural bobtail gene, so no puppy can be born double merle or with two bobtail copies.

MDR1: what every Aussie owner should know
MDR1 is a gene that pumps certain drugs out of the brain. Dogs with a faulty copy can't do that properly, and some ordinary veterinary drugs reach the brain at toxic levels. The best-known are ivermectin (at higher doses, used for some mange treatments), loperamide (Imodium — never give it to an Aussie from the medicine cabinet), acepromazine and butorphanol (sedatives), and some anti-cancer drugs.
N/N (clear) dogs handle these drugs normally. N/mut (carrier) dogs can react at higher doses. mut/mut (affected) dogs can react badly at normal doses. Sorcha and Lasair are carriers; Rua and Fia are clear. Because one parent of every litter we breed is clear, none of our puppies can be affected, but some will be carriers.
Every puppy is tested and goes home with its own result and a wallet card for your vet. Show it at every visit. Standard flea, tick and worming products at label doses are safe for carriers.
Merle: why we never mate merle to merle
Merle is the gene that dilutes patches of a dog's coat to give blue merle and red merle. One copy (M/m) gives a merle dog, healthy in every way. Two copies (M/M), from mating two merles, give a 'double merle' that is mostly white and has a high risk of deafness, blindness and malformed eyes. The Royal Kennel Club has refused to register merle × merle litters since 2013, and we would never breed one.
Some dogs carry a short 'cryptic' merle allele that doesn't show in the coat. That is why we test the allele length of every dog, not just look at them: Rua and Fia are m/m with no cryptic allele, so a merle bred to either can't produce a double merle.
Colour is never part of the price, and we don't take colour orders. Most families who come wanting a blue merle go home with whichever puppy suits them.
Tails
Some Aussies are born with a short natural bobtail (one copy of the T-box variant). Two copies are lethal before birth, so we never mate two bobtailed dogs. Tail docking is illegal in Ireland except for veterinary reasons. Every puppy on this site keeps the tail it was born with, and its card says which.
Health questions
Why do you breed from carriers at all?
Because a carrier mated to a clear dog cannot produce an affected puppy, and dropping every carrier would shrink an already small gene pool. Sorcha's MDR1 and Fia's HSF4 status are in their pedigrees and on every certificate a family gets.
What does 'clear by parentage' mean?
If both parents are DNA-tested clear (N/N), every puppy is clear too, so we don't re-test. For the 2026 litter that covers CEA, HSF4, prcd-PRA, CD and NCL6. MDR1 and DM are tested puppy by puppy because Sorcha is a carrier for both.
Do you test hearing?
Not routinely. Hearing problems in Aussies come mostly from double merles and heavy white on the head, and we breed neither. If a puppy ever seemed unsure of sound we would have it BAER-tested before it left.
