Meg came to us from the Lakemere kennel in Cumbria in May 2010. She was meant to be a pet and a show dog for Helen; she became the start of everything. Her two litters, in 2013 and 2015, gave us Clover and through her every dog we have now. She was gentle with every puppy in the house, hers or not, and slept on the landing so she could see both bedrooms. In December 2022 she slowed down on a walk. A scan found a tumour on her spleen, a haemangiosarcoma, which is too common in this breed. We said goodbye at home on 14 January 2023.

What Meg left us

Two litters: seven puppies in 2013 and six in 2015. Through Clover, every bitch we have bred from since descends from her: Clover, Hazel, Bramble, Wren, and now Campion in the Wildflower litter.

We publish how and when our dogs die because it is the only honest way to talk about longevity in this breed. Meg lived to 12 years 10 months. Haemangiosarcoma, the cancer that took her, is one of the commonest causes of death in Golden Retrievers. There is no screening test for it. On our Litters page we list every death among Meadowbrook dogs that we know of, with age and cause.
