The Wildflower litter

Bramble × Jasper, born 18 August 2026

This is Bramble's first litter. We chose Jasper for her because he is from a completely different line. Their puppies' COI is 1.6%, against a breed average of 6.1%. He adds bone and a lot of common sense to Bramble's lighter build and quick brain. Both are clear on every DNA test we do, so every puppy is hereditary clear.

We expect family dogs with enough drive to enjoy gundog training, mid gold as adults, at the middle of the breed standard for size. Five puppies are matched, Campion is staying with us, and Yarrow, a bold, busy dog, is still looking for the right home.

The puppy diary

  1. Yarrow on the lawn after his assessment, with an autumn leaf caught in his teal collar

    Tuesday 6 October 2026

Seven weeks: assessments done, families matched

Our friend Jo Kerridge did the temperament assessments this morning. She trains gundogs near Chipping Norton and has never met the puppies. Each puppy spent about ten minutes with her in a room they hadn't been in before: following, being gently held, retrieving a dummy, a dropped tray, an umbrella opening and the wobble board. We wrote it all down, put it next to seven weeks of our own notes, and spent the afternoon matching.

Every family has now had a phone call. Five puppies have homes to go to, Campion is staying with us, and Yarrow is still looking for the right home. He is a busy, bold boy who would love a family that wants to train. Weights are between 4,060 g (Sweetie) and 5,060 g (Sorrel).

  2. Sweetie being held in the garden after her microchip

    Tuesday 29 September 2026

Six weeks: microchips, a car ride and the hoover

All seven were microchipped by our vet this morning. Two of them squeaked, and all of them recovered in the time it takes to say 'chicken'. On Sunday each puppy had its first car ride in a crate: a ten-minute loop to the village and back, with Rob driving very slowly. Nobody was sick.

The hoover now runs every day while they eat. Sweetie, who was the most worried by it last week, ate through it today without looking up.

  3. Bramble lying on the lawn with one of her puppies curled up beside her

    Tuesday 22 September 2026

Five weeks: the first families visit

The garden pen is open every dry afternoon now. Its run has grass, a paddling tray, a low tunnel and a plank. The first approved families came this week: two each afternoon, an hour each, shoes off and hands washed at the door. Bramble supervises every visit from the step and then takes herself off for a nap.

Collars went on: orange, teal and brown for the boys; multicoloured, purple, red and yellow for the girls.

  4. Bramble nursing the Wildflower litter on the grass behind the house

    Tuesday 15 September 2026

Four weeks: outside on the grass

Their first proper afternoon on the lawn, in the sun. Bramble fed them on the grass, then went to lie in the shade and watched. The puppies are on soaked puppy food three times a day as well as Bramble, and the weighing on the kitchen scale has turned into a wrestling match.

From this week they hear our sound recordings at low volume while they eat: fireworks, thunder, a baby crying, traffic and a tractor.

  5. Tuesday 1 September 2026

    Two weeks: eyes open

Everyone's eyes are open; Yarrow's were first, on day 11. They have more than doubled their birth weights. Sweetie has gone from 338 g to 990 g and has not needed a top-up since day 4. From day 3 to day 16 we did the short daily handling routine (Early Neurological Stimulation). We describe it on the Raising page. We do it because it is calm, gentle handling, not because we think it works miracles.

  6. Tuesday 18 August 2026

Seven puppies, three dogs and four bitches

Bramble started settling in the whelping room on Monday evening. Sorrel arrived at 00:40, and Sweetie, the smallest, came last at 06:15. All seven are feeding well. Bramble is calm and very proud, and she has eaten scrambled egg for breakfast. Our vet checked all of them, and Bramble, at 10:30.
