Sorcha is our blue merle show and agility bitch; Rua is our red tri stock dog. We paired them for Rua's low hip score and clear MDR1, which balances Sorcha's carrier status, and for a litter that should suit both working and sport homes. Expect adults of 47–56 cm with a strong wish to work and a reasonable off-switch indoors.

All seven were microchipped by our vet yesterday and cheek-swabbed for MDR1 and DM; the swabs went to Laboklin the same afternoon and results usually take eight to ten days. Nobody minded the chip much — Derry complained loudly, then ate her dinner.
Four families visited this week, one at a time, shoes off and hands washed. The puppies now go out to the puppy garden for most of the day and come in at dusk. Weights are all up between 700 and 870 g on last week; Vartry is still the smallest and still gaining well.
Next week: the litter eye screen and the temperament assessment on 14 October, then matching on the 15th and 16th.
30 September 2026
First short trips across the yard in a crate on the quad trailer, first ten-minute drive to the village and back. Annamoe and Avoca slept; Slaney watched the hedges go by. The ducks came to the puppy-garden fence on Tuesday and Slaney spent twenty minutes staring at them, which is the kind of thing we write down.
Wormed at 2 and 4 weeks so far; the 6-week dose is due on the 7th. Solid food four times a day now; Sorcha feeds them only morning and night.

The litter moved from the whelping box in the back kitchen to the puppy room next door, with a litter tray area they are already using. First mush of soaked kibble on day 24. New surfaces every day: rubber mat, carpet tile, a wobble board, a crinkly tarp. Tess has started supervising through the gate.
16 September 2026
Everyone's eyes were open by day 14 and ears by day 17. They are on their feet, wobbling, and play-growling at each other. We have started the sound programme at low volume — traffic, thunder, a crowd, a tractor — while they eat.
Vartry passed 1,400 g this week, and we are out of the woods with her.
9 September 2026
First worming dose on day 14, weighed out puppy by puppy. Avoca and Liffey had their eyes open first, on day 12; the rest followed by the weekend. Nails trimmed for the first time, mostly for Sorcha's sake.
Vartry is at 1,010 g and gaining as fast as the others now. Everyone else is between 1,080 and 1,320 g.
2 September 2026
All seven have roughly doubled their birth weight, which is what we want to see by day 7. Vartry dropped to 318 g on day 2, so for four days she was topped up with puppy milk every three hours, nights included. She is now gaining on her own.
We do a few seconds of gentle handling each day from day 3 to day 16 — holding, turning, a cool cloth on the paws. We do it because it gets every puppy handled by a person every day, not because we believe it makes super-dogs; the evidence for that is thin.

Sorcha whelped seven puppies between ten past three and twenty to twelve this morning, all naturally, no vet needed: four dogs and three bitches. Three blue merles, one red merle, one black tri and two red tris; four natural bobtails and three full tails. Birth weights 340 to 445 g.
Sorcha is tired, hungry and very pleased with herself. The vet checks them all on day 3.
